Story
Early Life
Kiernan (born “Keld”) was born in the Golmore Jungle. Once becoming of age, he took the surname “Rehw-Gilda” and began his Wood-Warder training, dual short swords becoming his weapon of choice. The training instilled in him a love of his home, his people, and his culture. This love drove his strong desire to protect his people and their villages no matter the cost.
The Invasion of Othard
Becoming restless due to the ever-increasing Garlean presence in Othard, Kiernan joined the Dalmascan Resistance. He was hesitant at first to leave his home but felt that it was the best way to protect it. He fought in the resistance for many years in which his hatred of Garlemald only grew. He became a sort of boogeyman amongst the Garlean troops, known for his silent and brutal takedowns. They dubbed him “The Black Blade”. His superiors, however, grew worried at his reckless behavior and after one particularly nasty battle, his commander pulled him aside. She could see that he’d burn himself out sooner rather than later and probably wind up killed. Kiernan was sent to Sharlyan, to meet one of the commander’s contacts. She hoped that seeing the world, getting an education, would help him out of the darkness he was in.
Sharlyan
Kiernan reluctantly arrived in Sharlyan. He had kept his forest name throughout his time in the Resistance, seeing it as an extension of his Wood-Warder duties. Sharlyan felt different though and it felt wrong to use it, but he refused to take a city name, feeling like it was certifying that he’d never go home. His commander’s contact signed him up for classes as “Black Blade”, but Kiernan never fully accepted that as his name. Falling back on his existing skill set, Kiernan began classes in stealth and espionage, eventually earning his archon mark.During his studies he met Thancred and the two became friends despite Kiernan’s initial standoffishness. Kiernan confided in Thancred about his fears of taking another name and never being able to return home. Thancred joked that nothing could keep a man of Kiernan’s skills out and flippantly threw out “Kiernan” as a name suggestion. The name stuck in Kiernan’s mind, and he decided to take it on as his own.While Sharlyan has a code of non-interference, they still pride themselves on knowing the goings-on around the world. Kiernan agreed to join their information network and was sent to Ul’dah to monitor and report on the growing Ala Mhigan refugee crisis in the city state.
Ul'dah
While in Ul’dah, Kiernan hears of kidnappings taking place and decides to intervene. In doing so he meets X’Rhun Tia, who is also investigating the case. The two join forces, X’Rhun’s history with Sharlyan scholars bolstering their trust of one another. With the kidnappers defeated, X’Rhun suggests that they continue travelling around and protecting people together. Kiernan agrees, happy to be back helping the innocent like he tried to do back in Dalmasca. Along their travels, X’Rhun teaches Kiernan about the history of Ala Mhigo, the invasion, and red magic. It takes Kiernan a while to adjust to a rapier but eventually he finds joy in red magic. He sees X’Rhun as an invaluable friend and mentor and asks if he can take his name, “Rhun”, as his surname to which X’Rhun agrees.
The Ala Mhigan Resistance
After hearing of Ala Mhigo for many years travelling with X’Rhun, Kiernan wants to do more to help. There are rumblings of a large offensive being planned and Kiernan decides to join the Ala Mhgian Resistance to assist. His contacts in Sharlyan approve of his plan and are eager to hear more direct information from inside Ala Mhigo. He assists them with covert operations, information gathering, the escape of refugees, and acts as a liaison to the Resistance’s Sharlyan contacts.
Werlyt
Upon hearing of the Garlean’s Weapon program, Kiernan is assigned to act as a liaison between Gaius’s team and the Ala Mhigan Resistance, to both keep Sharlyan apprised of the situation with the Ruby Weapon and to watch Gaius whom they do not fully trust. With the defeat of the Emerald Weapon, Kiernan’s role shifts to liaison between the Ala Mhigan Resistance and the burgeoning Werlyt Resistance. With Werlyt freed from Garlean occupation, Kiernan stays to help them rebuild, but who knows where his travels will take him next…
